Anatomy of a Duel: Secession, Civil War, and the Evolution of Kentucky Violence explores the early stages of the Civil War in Kentucky through the lens of a duel that was fought near Maysville in 1862 between a Union colonel and a pro-Confederate civilian. In addition to following what happened to those involved with the duel, the book also explores how violence evolved in Kentucky in the years after the Civil War.

Sanders has written for a wide range of magazines, journals, and anthologies and his guest columns about Kentucky history have appeared in more than fifty newspapers across the region. He is the former executive director of the Perryville Battlefield Preservation Association and now serves as the Director of Research and Publications for the Kentucky Historical Society.
