Kentucky Humanities, the League of Women Voters of Lexington, and the Lexington Public Library present Janet Scott as Mary Carson Breckinridge and Mary Settles
Mary Carson Breckinridge’s journey through personal tragedy paired with the desire to serve those whose needs were greater than her own led her to establish the Frontier Nursing Service in 1925. The first American trained nurse midwife, Mary recognized the deficient healthcare in the region and sought to provide infant and maternal care to the citizens of eastern Kentucky.
Mary Settles survived abandonment by her husband, war on the doorstep of her home at Pleasant Hill, religious persecution, and economic decline. As a public school teacher and religious educator for twenty-seven years, Mary shared her vision of racial equality, women's rights, respect for the earth, and enduring hope for peace with more than three generations of Kentuckians.
Janet Scott portrays Mary Carson Breckinridge and Mary Settles. Ms. Scott grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and graduated summa cum laude from Barnard College. She enjoyed a 30-year career as a working actress, playwright, and teacher in New York City. In addition to her Chautauqua performances, Ms. Scott is a guest artist with the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre.
Kentucky Chautauqua is an exclusive presentation of Kentucky Humanities with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and from: Christina Lee Brown, the Carson-Myre Charitable Foundation, and PNC.
